Meet Nik Hill, The Local Comedy Powerhouse

Ahead of our first ever indoor comedy show at Blackfriars Priory, we’ve caught up with Nik Hill, the local award winning comedian behind our new night, Frolics at the Friars. Nik answered a few questions for us so you can get to know him better, and get an idea of what to expect when you come along to a Frolics at the Friars Comedy Night!

Tell us a little about yourself and Hilarious Comedy

Gloucester born and bred, spent formative years at Kings School from 1964 - 1975 and was also a Cathedral Chorister for four years; retired in 2023 after spending 32 years in Recruitment; started my Comedy Career properly in 2004 but have been also a drummer in local bands since 1979. Now focusing predominantly on Comedy although other interests include Walking Rugby, Photography, my cherished 1974 VW camper and our beloved Irish Terrier.

What three words would you use to describe the work you do and why?

Entertaining, amusing and challenging.

What can the audience expect from the show at Blackfriars Priory?

Two very different styles of acts; the first being a Comedian who has built a reputation on writing pun based material and the second act totally different - a magician with some great tricks mixed with some madcap comedy routines also; held together by an MC with local tales of life in the County.

What has been your biggest highlight to date?

3 highlights; the first in 2023 when I entered and won the Silver Stand up competition at the Leicester Comedy festival; the second being the only Comedian EVER to perform in the Cathedral, a place I spent many hours at as a schoolboy and Chorister and the third being a return to where my comedy life all started back in 2004, the Guildhall.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Most of my material is based on true life experiences ranging from some of the strange gigs I have performed at to life in retirement but, without doubt, the biggest source of inspiration comes from my long suffering wife who consistently manages to say the wrong thing which often winds its way into my set.

Anything exciting coming up?

As mentioned earlier, I am returning to my roots at the Guildhall in May, hosting 4 shows featuring double headliner bills with a diverse range of acts from across the UK circuit; have also a run of gigs across the County ranging from Sailing clubs to Social clubs and also a fundraiser for Ukraine in June at the Redwell centre, Matson.

You can see Nik perform, along with Wayne the Weird and Tony Cowards at the first comedy night at Blackfriars Priory on Friday 4th April. Keep your eye out for more shows in the future, as this is going to be a regular feature on our programme!
