Learn about Mind Body Spirit with Deer Spirit Events co-organiser Julie Fenn

We recently caught up with Deer Spirit Events co-organiser Julie Fenn to learn more about this unique event during National Stress Awareness month.

So, what is a Mind Body Spirit Show, then? Isn't that just a place where people come to get Tarot and Psychic readings?

That's part of it, but it’s much more than that! A Mind Body Spirit Show is a place you come if you want to feel uplifted, to nurture yourself, relax, unwind or be yourself free from judgement or everyday life and its problems. It’s a place where you can mix with like-minded people and have a relaxing, chilled out time.

How does it do all that, then?

We have a wide range of exhibitors, speakers, experts who specialise in wellbeing, spirituality and self-help, who can provide advice; lovely venues like Blackfriars, which help create a positive vibe; but most of all the people who come here want to create peace, harmony and unity. There’s a fantastic vibe at our shows and it’s amazing to be part of it.

But there are psychics and mediums, there though, yes?

Absolutely. The top local and national readers feature at our events. Authentic, professional readers who are talented, insightful and respectful. They read in different ways, too - Tarot, Angel, Oracle, Psychic, Shamanic, Psychic Art, Palmistry, Numerology - so there's something for everybody, whatever they enjoy, or are drawn to. We also have a mediumship demonstration at the April Show.

Do you have any special guests at your Gloucester Shows, this year?

Romany psychic and fortune teller, Lee Petulengro, will be doing one-on-one readings at November’s, on the Sundays, only.

Lee appeared at the recent Brit Awards, doing psychic, tarot and palm readings at the Awards after party. He also featured on Channel 4’s Celebrity Ghost Trip, where he read for the celebrities who were visiting some of Britain’s most haunted places.

How did you get into the Mind Body Spirit genre?

I was in a grief situation, after losing two relatives in the 1990s. Initially, I was looking for comfort, reassurance and knowledge, but by going on this path, I realised that there was much more to life, the world and the Universe, than we think and we're told. I took up Reiki healing and teaching and came to realise the important connection between our mind, body and spirit, and how this connection is crucial to our Wellbeing.

I started running Mind Body Spirit Shows in Gloucester back in 2017, it’s a great place full of lovely switched-on people.

Why Deer Spirit?

Back in 2016, Cris (my partner and now co-organiser of Deer Spirit Events) and I were driving home late one night, on the way back to Gloucester from Stansted Airport, after a holiday at the German Christmas Markets. On the road, just outside Bicester on the way to Witney, a thought appeared in my head 'Drive carefully, watch out for deer on the road.'

About half an hour later, we were on the A41, the Gloucester-side of Burford, when we noticed the cars slowing down in front. In the road was a beautiful roe deer. She'd been hit by a car and was badly injured. We stopped, got out and directed the traffic from both sides, to avoid hitting her. We were there about half an hour, keeping more cars from running into her, but she was too badly injured and couldn't save her.

I was shocked, but also felt a connection to the beautiful creature. I was touched by her vulnerability, her gentleness and her courage during those awful few moments.

It showed me just how vulnerable we all are, trying to survive in a difficult and often hostile, world. And when, a few months later, I was setting up my business, I decided to name it after the lovely deer, which so touched my heart.

Why Blackfriars?

Its the best venue in the city for a show like ours. We used to hold of our show at the Gloucester Guildhall, which was great, but we needed somewhere bigger.

Blackfriars is not only rich in heritage, but it looks great, inside and out, there’s lots of space, and its a bit spooky. Perfect for us!
